Waukee Family YMCA

We've had good experiences here the last couple months. The locker rooms have been clean whenever we used them. The machines and weights are in good condition. My wife and I enjoy the eGym equipment. The people who work at the desk and in childcare have been friendly and helpful. Modern facility, great place to take the family.

Facility, equipment, and pool are perfectly fine. However the internet connection is embarrassingly slow and incapable of handling all of their members. If you plan to use Spotify, stream workouts or Netflix on an iPad, etc. I would NOT recommend the Waukee Y as you will be frustrated and disappointed. On the best days when it’s less busy, it’s possible to connect slowly to basic apps, on most days the network won’t allow you to connect at all (see photo). The Y is also oversold and its often hard to get on a treadmill. If they fixed their internet speed and capacity, and added a few treadmills, my rating would be an easy 5 stars.

Nice staff, I know this is weird to say but the bathrooms were clean and nice. Pickleball was good there.

This is not for adults even though they call it Family YMCA, mostly for kids. To begin with They let anyone have membership and that makes it crowded always. No one knows when the swimming pool has open hours, it's always used for some events. Lot of Treadmill machines have issues and despite these many memberships they take forever to fix and hence people just need to wait few times. Lot of teenagers around weights with no supervision, just occupy weights for the sake of TikTok for hours and always come in jeans, denims, flip-flops and not clean machines once done using. Coming to staff its a mixed bag depending on each individual. I always felt downstairs staff is much more responsive and knowledgeable. Whereas upstairs staff is mostly teenagers that do not seem to know what's happening around. I have paused and canceled membership after consideration as this YMCA will never get better with their no limit to membership as the city is growing day by day rapidly. Only thing I always had fun with is the racketball.

The staff is so kind and helpful and so are the other people working out. We started here for the pool and it is rare that we have to wait more than 10 minutes for a lane. Connecting withnother swimmers has allowed us to learn and push ourselves in our workouts. The gym is always busy, but everyone is helpful and considerate. We have had staff say hi to us every time we are there and always offer to help if we need anything. I frequently come with kids (6 & 8) and they are never treated like they shouldn't be there. In fact, the staff asks them what their goals are and offers to help them too. They cheer when the kids are clearly putting in effort to learn new skills. A great family gym. We love our family time at the Y. The new app makes it very easy to see what is being offered and when things will be available. I'm sure the January rush will make things a little crazy for a while, but there are so many things to do here that we have back up plans for any time we are visiting.

Front desk staff is incredibly cruel for no reason. My sister and I got practically got harassed by a lady at the front desk for trying to bring a guest in. She got all up in our face and acted like we were stupid. Needless to say we will not be coming back to this YMCA and we do not recommend anyone to get a membership here. They have horribly rude staff with zero respect for paying customers!!!!! My advice for the staff is to sit tf down and quit taking their jobs so seriously.

The lockers rooms are the second dirtiest I have ever seen besides the Buccaneer Ice Arena. There is a serious ant problem going on and it seems that the men's locker room never gets cleaned and is gross. Not sure how this place is even allowed to operate with the current facility conditions as it is clear that sanitation is not a priority.

I have went to this gym since the start of my school years, it’s been around 4 years. I can say, I’ve had a good experience until recently. I have cancelled my member ship and moved to genesis on university (100% recommend) The final straw for me other than the staring problem here, is a guy who either works here or is in a manager position (he has glasses, redhead, short hair, dresses like a librarian, and could be knocked over by a small gust of wind). Mr power trip picks so many issues with so many people, Incredibly unreasonable weak/scared individual. He abuses his power, thinks he is a tough guy, and has even TRESPASSED a young man for simply cussing in the parking lot while having a conversation with friends. I no longer come here because I have zero respect for b.s like that. Talk about taking your job too seriously
